Useful Information for Poms moving to Victoria

Recommended Posts

Thought I would start a thread that may help other Poms whom are moving over to Melbourne.

We shipped every item (except outside furniture/tools/lawn mower etc.) over to Oz. However there were some items that we needed to purchase until our items arrived.

For really cheap Kitchenware there is KMart and Big W. We bought our Kettle in KMart for $8. They both also do a Kitchen Pack for about $35. We also bought our knives, forks, spoons etc.

We also visited the local Charity Shops - over here they are called Op Shops.

Our local one is in the Plaza and is run by http://www.vinnies.org.au/home-act - we picked up plates, cups, mugs etc. from there.

For furniture we have 2 Ikea Stores in Melbourne, one in Richmond and the other in Springvale and it's laid out exactly like the one's in the UK so you don't get lost (or you do if you're my Husband)! However they do a fully cooked breakfast for $2.95 and unlimited coffee for $2.50 :wink:. This is the only way I can get Hubby to go!

Other furniture stores which have been mentioned for good value are http://www.superamart.com.au/?gclid=CNiMoPX_0rUCFRBJpgodnVQASw and http://www.fantasticfurniture.com.au/

For electrical items, many Poms have mentioned http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/

We bought our car by using http://www.carsales.com.au, but have also been told there is a http://www.carcity.com.au/ which other Poms have bought cars from too.

Hopefully this will give you an insight on costs etc. before you come over.

Great info thanks I found that if set google Australia as my home page throws up many more results when searching than uk google sorry if stating the obvious!

That's very true Memmy, when searching back in the UK, it doesn't always show you what you need, hence why I tried adding these websites to this page to help others.

Have thought of a couple more too, as well as Aldi Australia which is really good for all your basics, Coles and Woolworths to a home delivery service too.

Their websites are as follows:-

http://www.coles.com.au/ & http://www.woolworths.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/website/woolworths?s_kwcid=TC|15523|woolworths||S|e|23668539341&gclid=CNfSm9Ge1bUCFQpapQodYh4Aag

These seem to be our main Supermarkets, there is of course IGA - http://www.iga.net.au/igafresh/

And 7Eleven.
